5 Myths About Orlando’s Weather for New Residents
Orlando, known for its world-renowned theme parks and vibrant lifestyle, is often misunderstood when it comes to its weather. While the Sunshine State boasts a generally pleasant climate, there are several myths about severe weather in Orlando that may confuse prospective residents. Let’s clear up some of these misconceptions and give you a more accurate picture of Orlando weather year-round. One of the most common misconceptions is that Orlando’s summer season means constant downpours. While it’s true that summer is part of the "wet season," it doesn’t mean it rains all day, every day. Sub-tropical Orlando experiences afternoon showers due to the sea breezes from the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico converging over the peninsula. (The air that gets heated up on land starts to rise, creating low pressure at the surface. The cooler air over the water then moves in to replace the rising warm air. This develops a mini cold front or sea breeze that pushes further inland. Along that boundary, the winds converge, and extra lift can spark showers.) These showers are usually short-lived, often lasting just 30 minutes to an hour. Once the rain passes, the sun usually returns. So, while you might need an umbrella, you’ll also have plenty of time to enjoy the outdoors. Another misconception about the Orlando climate is that the humidity is unbearable throughout the year. While it’s true that the humidity is high during the summer months, particularly from mid-June to mid-September, it’s not a year-round issue. During the winter months, Orlando’s humidity levels drop significantly, offering a more comfortable climate. Spring weather (late April to early June) offers the same temperatures as the autumn (mid-September to early November) with similarly low rainfall and lower humidity as well. The key to enjoying Orlando’s summer is to plan activities for the cooler parts of the day, such as early mornings or late afternoons, and to take advantage of air-conditioned spaces when the humidity peaks. Orlando is known for its mild winters, but that doesn’t mean it’s always warm. From December through March, daytime temperatures often hover around the 60s and 70s, but nights can get autumnal, even surprisingly chilly. While the lows are usually in the mid-40s to mid-50s, it’s not uncommon for temperatures to dip into the 40s, and on rare occasions, even into the 30s. Although freezing temperatures are rare, it’s wise to dress in warm layers if you’re planning to spend time outside during the winter months. And every so often, you’ll be delighted with a three to four-day span of 60-degree daytime temperatures that feel like paradise. (Especially if you have friends or relatives living in colder climes and complaining that it’s below freezing!) While Florida is notorious for its hurricane season, hurricanes in Orlando are less common than in the coastal areas. (There have only been 77 hurricanes in the Orlando area since 1930, making it relatively safe from hurricanes.) Due to its inland location, Orlando is somewhat shielded from the full force of hurricanes. By the time a hurricane makes its way to Central Florida, it has already had hours to weaken. However, the city can still experience tropical storms and related extreme weather events, so it’s important to be prepared. Investing in proper storm shutters and having an emergency plan in place can help ensure you’re ready if a storm does approach. This is not a myth! In fact, Orlando doesn’t see snow. The closest you’ll get to snow in Orlando is the artificial snow at Disney World during the holiday season. While January and February are the months in which Florida is most likely to experience snow, the last recorded snowfall in the city was back in 1977, and even then, it was just a light dusting. So, if you’re dreaming of a white winter, Orlando is not the place for you. But for those who prefer a snow-free winter, Orlando’s mild climate is ideal.
