Family Road Trips from Savannah, Georgia

1. Savannah National Wildlife Refuge | 10 minutes away

With over 30,000 acres of woodland, freshwater marshes, creek, and river deltas, the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge is an area of incredible biodiversity, a peaceful escape into nature. This refuge is home to a variety of wildlife, including alligators, deer, and numerous bird species. Visitors can enjoy wildlife viewing, hiking trails, and scenic drives through marshlands. Take an adventure up and down the waterways in your own canoe, or cycle or drive on the Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive. Because it’s so close (only a 10-minute drive), it’s one of those Savannah day trips that can be enjoyed every weekend!

2. Skidaway Island | 25 minutes away

Home to Skidaway Island State Park, Skidaway Island is a great “natural escape” day trip perfect for families. Its location on salt flats and marshlands that are slightly inland makes it unique. Teeming with wildlife, from deer and waterfowl to crabs, the state park is an oasis for a variety of animals. You can observe them from the various raised trails and platforms built throughout the area, including Jay Wolf Nature Trail where you can explore maritime forests, spot wildlife, and enjoy picturesque views of the salt marshes. The Skidaway Island State Park also offers camping facilities for those looking to extend their stay.

3. Tybee Island | 30 minutes away

Tybee Island is a classic coastal getaway known for its sandy beaches, vibrant atmosphere, and historic lighthouse. Only 30 minutes away by car, it’s one of the best quick vacations for families coming from Savannah. This southern beach town features long stretches of sand, plus dolphin tours, sea kayaking, and the Tybee Lighthouse & Museum with sweeping views of the island and surrounding area. Families can also explore Fort Pulaski National Monument, visit the Tybee Island Marine Science Center, or take a dolphin-watching cruise for a memorable day trip. Tybee is a great place to let the kids get their energy out on the sand!

4. Bluffton, SC | 40 minutes away

Crossing over into South Carolina, Bluffton charms visitors with its historic district, art galleries, and scenic riverfront views. There’s something to do for everyone in the family. History buffs can explore the Bluffton Historic District and tour the Heyward House built in 1841. The SOBA (Society of Bluffton Artists) Gallery has over 100 exhibitions to suit every artist lover's tastes. Foodies can indulge in fresh seafood at waterfront restaurants like Bluffton Oyster Co or delightful sweet treats at The Cottage.

5. Hilton Head Island, SC | 45 minutes away

Hilton Head Island, just north of Savannah, is an excellent southern road trip! This charming town, complete with multiple beaches, is an excellent alternative to Tybee Island. Hilton Head is also known for its shopping, world-class golf courses, and upscale resorts, making it a popular family day trip destination for multiple interests. While there, be sure to visit picturesque Harbour Town with its famed lighthouse.

6. Beaufort, SC | 1 hour away

Beautiful Beaufort is characterized by preserved antebellum architecture, gorgeous parks, and an inspiring downtown. You may enjoy biking along the Spanish Moss Trail or Lagoon Trail, strolling through The Point, or soaking in the views at Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park. Also recommended: paying a visit to the Gullah Geechee Visitor Center, which explores the unique Gullah Geechee people. Rich in history and Southern charm, Beaufort offers the perfect scenery and adventure great for weekend road trips.

7. Jekyll Island, GA | 1 hour 40 minutes away

While it's a bit farther, Jekyll Island's allure makes it well worth the drive. From the pristine beaches to historic sites and outdoor activities, this barrier island boasts things to do for all ages. The young ones in the family will especially enjoy the Summer Waves Water Park with 11 acres of rides and activities. Jekyll Island Mini Golf & Bike Barn has over 20 miles of paths and trails for the little ones, but there are also 18-hole courses for the adults in the island’s center. Animal lovers can enjoy a full day of activity built for them with dolphin cruises from the Jekyll Wharf and learn about sea turtles at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center.

8. Charleston, SC | 2 hours away

Charleston is one of the most popular Savannah day trips on this list! While a day trip to Charleston isn’t long enough to visit its beaches or outlying areas, you can easily hit up sites like Rainbow Row, Waterfront Park, and City Market in a single day, making it great for weekend road trips – coming back time and again! Explore the historic streets lined with colorful homes, visit iconic landmarks like Fort Sumter and the Battery, indulge in Lowcountry cuisine, and take a carriage tour to soak in the city's charm and culture.

9. Amelia Island, FL | 2 hours away

Family road trips don’t have to mean hours and hours of driving, and from Savannah, it only takes 2 hours to get somewhere new to enjoy a quick vacation. 10. Augusta, GA | 2.5 hours away

Although best known for hosting the prestigious The Masters golf tournament, Augusta has a walkable historic downtown with popular restaurants, shopping, and more. The city is full of such rich history, much of which can be learned at the Augusta Museum of History. Families can bring their children to the Riverwalk area, which features a children’s playground, gardens, and the Jessye Norman Amphitheater.  Other sites to visit include the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area and the Morris Museum of Art.
